WASHINGTON D.C. (KKTV) - On Tuesday, President Joe Biden invited thousands of guests to the White House for a celebration as he signed the Respect for Marriage Act.

Among those invited was the owner of Club Q, an LGBTQI+ bar in Colorado Springs where five people were killed and several others injured when an gunman opened fire using an AR-15 style rifle.

The Respect for Marriage Act gives federal protections for same-sex and interracial couples and serves as a preventative measure in case the U.S. Supreme Court decides to reverse previous rulings which allowed states to make the marriages legal in the first place.

Although states will not be required to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, they will be required to recognize marriages conducted elsewhere in the country. The legislation also includes a provision to respect religious liberty by ensuring that churches can still refuse to perform same-sex marriages.
