‘Still in shock’: Grieving family looking for answers after man is found fatally shot at scene of crash
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The family of Efrain Archuleta is looking for answers after the 24-year-old was found shot and fatally wounded at a car crash Oct. 16.
“I want to know what happened, what it was over,” said brother Enrique.
Enrique Archuleta was waiting for his younger brother on the night of the 16th.
“We are having a barbecue here at my house Saturday. I talk to him around 7 o’clock, and he was on his way over here.”
But hours went by and Efrain never showed up.
“My dad called me at, like 5 in the morning [of the 17th]. They were trying to call me all night, but by the time I had actually seen my phone, everybody was calling me trying to tell me your brother got shot. He died.”
Police say they were called out to a multi-vehicle crash at Bonfoy Avenue and East Boulder Street about an hour after Enrique last spoke to his brother. When they got on scene, everyone was unhurt except for one driver who was unconscious. When first responders were trying to revive him, they discovered a gunshot wound.
“It was a reported car crash and then when the police got there, according to what the detectives said, that he was already dead before they even arrived.”
Detectives believe Efrain Archuelta was shot a short distance from the crash scene and was then involved in the wreck soon after. Police did not elaborate on whether the victim was shot while already driving.
“He didn’t show up. So I thought he had something else to do. I fell asleep, I get woken up to that,” Enrique told 11 News.
Police and SWAT arrested 23-year-old Cameron Ukaeje the following day on allegations of first-degree murder. A motive is still unclear.
“He didn’t deserve to go out like that,” Enrique said.
Enrique said his brother was a good person who love his family. He struggled with opioid addiction and was trying to get off of it when he died.
“I tried to help him a couple days before the incident ... he wanted me to help him out and we’re trying to get all that stuff situated, but this ended up happening.”
The family has created a GoFundMe in Efrain’s honor, with funds intended for a organization that supports the fight against opioid addiction.
While Ukaeje remains behind bars, the family is grieving the loss of Efrain.
“My grandparents, my dad, and my other brother, they’re all taking it pretty hard. We’re all taking it pretty hard. We’re trying to do the best we can.”
