Colorado rolling out free rapid COVID testing that can be brought to your home
DENVER (KKTV) - Colorado is making it easier than ever to take a COVID test!
The state is introducing a new program that will bring tests right to your door -- and at no charge!
Colorado has purchased 2 million Binax rapid tests, which can be ordered on the state website and brought straight to your home. Each kit includes eight tests and shows results within 15 minutes.
The move is part of a multi-front battle to curb the pandemic as we move into the fall and winter months. Health officials have said previously that getting at least 80 percent of eligible Coloradans vaccinated by the end of October and by exercising greater precaution such as staying home when ill, the state can keep hospitalizations from rising the level seen last winter.
Gov. Jared Polis says the new rapid testing program is specifically aimed at making sure schools can stay open.
“We are even paying kids $10 a week to be part of the weekly testing program,” the governor said.
But while important, the state doesn’t just want people relying on tests -- it continues to urge every Coloradan who can to get vaccinated.
“Overall we know that vaccinated individuals at this time are about eight times less likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 than unvaccinated individuals,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy. “Our counties that tend to have the highest hospitalization rates ... Weld or Pueblo County or El Paso County, tend to be our counties where we see the lowest vaccination rates.”
