2 Canon City police officers involved in shooting, suspect publicly identified

CANON CITY, Colo. (KKTV) - Two Canon City police officers were involved in a deadly shooting in early May.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect who was killed as Dalton Lee Buckholz on Monday. The shooting happened May 1 near the Quality Inn on Highway 50 close to Dozier Ave. It was just after 10 at night when shots rang out.

A 20-year-old man was also shot but is expected to survive.

“Two members of the Cañon City Police Department attempted to make contact with Buckholz, who was driving a black, 1999 Infiniti near the Quality Inn motel in Cañon City when, at some point during the incident, shots were fired by the two members of the department,” Susan Medina with CBI wrote in a release. “Members of the Cañon City Police Department were not injured as a result of the incident.”

The officer were still on leave as of Monday.

“Although there have been a number of unconfirmed reports circulating about the circumstances of the case, because of the active nature of the investigation involving the officer-involved shooting, specific details cannot be released at this time,” Medina added.
