DENVER (KKTV) - Play ball! Major League Baseball is bringing its All-Star Game to Colorado!

Murmurs began Monday when multiple news sources began reporting the likelihood the game would be hosted by the Rockies, with Vic Lombardi of Altitude Sports among the first to break the news. The last time the All-Star Game was held at Coors Field was in 1998. ESPN also confirmed the venue selection, citing sources, as did Michael Spencer with 11 News partner CBS Denver.

Now it’s official: The MLB announced Tuesday the game will indeed be coming to Colorado!

Atlanta lost Major League Baseball’s summer All-Star Game on Friday over the league’s objections to sweeping changes to Georgia voting laws that critics — including the CEOs of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola — have condemned as being too restrictive.

MLB said the Rockies were a natural choice to take over because the team was already in the midst of bidding to host a future All-Star Game.

“The Rockies had supplied a detailed plan for hotel, event space and security that took months to assemble, and MLB staff had already made several site visits to Denver. In addition, Gov. Jared Polis and Mayor Michael Hancock have both committed to provide the necessary facilities and services needed to support this year’s festivities,” MLB said.

“We are excited to host this year’s All-Star festivities at Coors Field,” said Rockies Chief Operating Officer Greg Feasel in a statement on the MLB website. “We are confident that our organization along with the city, state, VISIT DENVER and the Denver Sports Commission are capable of putting on this premier event in a relatively quick time frame because of the preparations that had already been done. Summer in Colorado is something everyone in the country should experience, and we embrace this opportunity to show off our beautiful ballpark and everything our city, state and region have to offer.”

Polis said the game and festivities surrounding it are expected to flush $190 million into Colorado’s economy.

The game will be held on July 13.
