JAMESTOWN, Colo. (KKTV) - Growth has slowed on one of two active wildfires burning in Boulder County, and firefighters have continued to add containment.

The CalWood Fire broke out amid extreme fire conditions Saturday and quickly gobbled thousands of acres. Fire behavior eased up Sunday, and firefighters have continued to make progess since then. As of Wednesday morning, the fire has burned 9,854 acres and is 21 percent contained.

Nine hundred homes currently remain under evacuation.

The CalWood Fire ignited midday Saturday in an area near the Cal-Wood Education Center, south of Highway 7 and northeast of Bald Mountain. The fire blew up almost immediately, burning 7,000 acres in a matter of hours in Boulder County and destroying 26 homes.

The fire is burning between the towns of Jamestown and Lyons; the former was completely evacuated Saturday while the latter has been placed on an evacuation warning, meaning there is a high possibility it will be evacuated at some point.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has released a preliminary list of structures lost in the fire. Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Division Chief Mike Wagner said during a briefing Sunday that all of the structures were houses, but some may have been second homes.

  • Lefthand Canyon at James Canyon
  • Peak To Peak at Highway 7
